5 Male 30 years old Has a degree but has never worked. Has been injecting heroin for 10 years and has been through rehab 4 times. Has been to prison twice for theft. Female 60 years old Retired. Has smoked cigarettes for 45 years – usually about 20 a day. Has recently developed a bad cough and is being referred to a specialist consultant.

6 Male 27 years old For the last 2 years has drunk a bottle of gin a day. Is a self employed accountant. Has the ‘shakes’ if he can’t drink. Recently lost his driving licence. Female 42 years old Had major back surgery 5 years ago and has been addicted to high doses of pain killer ever since. Has recently been having stomach problems and is being investigated for an ulcer. Is an office manager.

7 Female 14 years old Gets drunk at weekends and takes ketamine every so often. She is a bright pupil but recently her grades have been slipping. Her parents are splitting up. Male 17 years old Diabetic. Tests his own blood and gives himself daily insulin injections. His condition is stable and he ensures he has a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

8 Female 19 years old. At college. She regularly uses cannabis and speed. She smokes 8-12 cigarettes a day. She is very groggy after taking speed but manages to get college work in on time Male 15 years old. Has run away from home and consequently dropped out of school since his mum’s boyfriend moved in. Sniffs solvents most days. Shop lifts. Is living rough.
