Page Two: Soldiers saying, “halte, the soldier ordered in a stern voice, it was a familiar word as it was frightening.” The soldiers are instilling fear in the girls because they are using strong emotion and precise vocabulary to intimidate the girls. The author is forshadowing negative things to come!

Revising Thinking As We Read (Level 5) Book Title:___________ Global Idea (theme)How is it Changing?Evidence for the Change Hatred causes fear. Hatred can eventually cause death. The fear is now turning into a legitimate fight for their lives. Page 95 “It’s very dark”, “mama whispered”-as they stood in the yard with their blankets and bundles of food.

(like the voices in Luke Skywalker’s head when he is trying to take out the Death Star-notice the author’s name for the station “DEATH Star”) There is an intense feeling of desperation and potential death yet the author sprinkles in some hope by using nature to give the reader some peace with the intense turmoil Old Theme “hatred causes fear” New theme based upon Author’s clues or CRAFT or TOOLS “Even during the worst times of fear and potential death, there is always a sign of hope that can get you through”
