CUNA Mutual Group’s Quality Assurance Process In the context of Solution Delivery

What is Solution Delivery? The process of delivering a new technology solution or delivering new functionality in an existing technology solution

Solution Delivery Examples b Building a new business system b Adding to an existing business system b Purchasing a business system b Creating a Lotus Notes database b Adding a new storage system to our servers b Upgrading our word processing tool b Bringing in a new development tool b Operating system maintenance cycles b Upgrading network topology b Making a configuration change

Working Customer w/ Scheduled Operation Plan Identified Plan to Resolve Need New Application or Technology Tools System Diagnostics Operate Production Ready Solution Consult (People or Process) Interpret Implement & Stabilize Production Acceptance Reactive or Proactive Need Established Schedule Non-technical solution Fixes Existing Component Logged and Routed Request Strategic Planning Running Solution Selected Technology Solution Tested Solution Develop Feasibility & Planning Conceptualize Defined High Level Drivers Gate CUNA Mutual’s IT Process Workflow

Business Case (Scope) Checkpoint Requirements Checkpoint DesignComponent Integration Test Construct Checkpoints Environment Integration Test Acceptance Test Implementation Test Benefits Realization Assessment = Verify = Validate Test PhasesSpecification Phases Component (Unit) Test Checkpoint CUNA Mutual’s QA V-Model Conceptualization Feasibility/Planning Develop Implement/Stabilize Operate Are we doing the right job? Are we doing the job right?

Quality Assurance Checkpoints b Verification/Validation b Test Planning on left (Review) b Test Execution on right (Testing) b Dual Development paths b Communication b Roles defined b Business Involved Throughout b No Surprises

Before it gets physical...

Quality Plan The Quality Plan describes the specific deliverables that are inspected at each checkpoint on the V-Model. In addition to detailing the validation and verification objectives on each deliverable, the plan lists the roles that are involved and the contribution each role makes. The Quality Plan is documented in the Wizard in the IT Process Workflow Book.

Quality Plan Expectations b Deliverables should be stable when entering a checkpoint b Informal reviews can be held throughout development to enhance the quality with formal review looking for defects b Standards vs. Guidelines b Suggestions will be incorporated or addressed with appropriate authority (See the Quality Plan for each deliverable) b Defects need to be fixed at the point of origin and cycle back through the process b Changes need to be reflected to previously reviewed deliverables - may require follow up reviews b The project plan needs to be evaluated at every checkpoint b Test results will be approved by someone other than the tester

Test Planning makes testing a non-event

Business Case (Scope) Checkpoint Requirements Checkpoint DesignComponent Integration Test Construct Checkpoints Environment Integration Test Acceptance Test Implementation Test Benefits Realization Assessment = Verify = Validate Component (Unit) Test Checkpoint QA V-Model Conceptualization Feasibility/Planning Develop Implement/Stabilize Operate Are we doing the right job? Are we doing the job right? Traditional development example

Business Case (Scope) Checkpoint Requirements Checkpoint DesignComponent Integration Test Construct Checkpoints Environment Integration Test Acceptance Test Implementation Test Benefits Realization Assessment = Verify = Validate Component (Unit) Test Checkpoint QA V-Model - Purchased View: Purchaser is responsible for tasks ‘above’ the line. Conceptualization Feasibility/Planning Develop Implement/Stabilize Operate Are we doing the right job? Are we doing the job right? Vendor Performs ‘below’ the line.
