What is a noun? A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea. People- farmer, mechanic, father, Mrs. Gatz, Bob, etc. Places- ocean, Canada, porch, Spain, classroom, etc. Things- scissors, giraffe, pen, tugboat, skateboard, etc. Ideas- love, faith, courage, anxiety, happiness, etc.

All nouns are Common or Proper. CommonProper Names any person, place, or thing Names specific people, places, or things Ex. man, school, newspaper Ex. Mr. Gatz, Culver City High, The Los Angeles Times

Collective Nouns A collective noun names a group of people or things. Example. jury, flock, fleet, club, class, group

Compound Nouns A compound noun is a noun consisting of more than a single word. It could be separate words, or it could be two or more words joined by a hyphen. Example. social studies, dining room, merry-go-round, sister-in-law
