Mental Illness Medical disease/disorder that affects the mind and prevents a person from a normal life People suffering from mental illness are unable to cope with change

2 types of mental illness… 1- organic- disorder caused by physical illness or injury to the brain (example: brain tumor, alcoholism) 2- functional- no brain damage is involved, caused by stress, conflict, fear, or poor coping skills

Anxiety Disorders Fear prevents a person from having a normal life 1- phobia 2- obsessive-compulsive disorder 3- panic disorder 4- Post-traumatic stress disorder

Phobia Intense fear of something (example: spiders, clowns, ect.)

Obsessive- Compulsive “OCD” Unreasonable need to think and act in a certain way(example: washing hands) Obsession- thinking about something to much Compulsion- urgent, repeated behavior

Panic Disorder Panic attacks Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder- person who has gone through traumatic event feels severe and long lasting after effects

Somatoform Disorders Hypochondriac- person complains and believes they are sick, but no physical symptoms can be found

Affective Disorders “Mood Disorders” Clinical Depression Manic-Depressive Disorder

Clinical Depression Sadness/hopelessness that lasts for a few weeks and interferes with daily life »Can not concentrate »Has trouble sleeping »Has trouble making decisions

Manic-Depressive Disorder “Bi-Polar” Person’s moods shift dramatically from one extreme to another for no reason Manic state- talkative, extremely happy, makes lots of plans Depressive state- does not want to be around anyone or do anything

Antisocial Disorder Person is in constant conflict with society. The person has the ability to tell right from wrong but does not care

Passive-Aggressive Disorder Person resents being told what to do and is very uncooperative

Schizophrenia Mental disorder meaning “split mind” Person could talk to themselves Act in odd manner Neglect to take care of themselves Paranoid

Depression Why does it happen? What happens when someone is depressed? What are the symptoms? How can you get help?

The Facts There is no single cause of depression. Factors such as substance abuse, genetics, environment, and stressful life events

What happens…. Depression involves brain chemistry- when a person becomes depressed certain chemicals called nuerotransmitters stop working

Getting Help Do not wait to talk with someone about what you have been feeling Talk therapy In severe cases, medication Getting actively involved in other positive areas of life

Cutting What is it? Why do people do it? What do you do if someone has these signs?

Cutting Act of self injury (more prevalent among girls) can include burning Some people with dramatic personalities cut as a way to call attention to themselves, other cut to relieve tension. Once a pattern starts it can be a difficult pattern to break.

What to do: 1- tell someone- hardest part/ tell someone you trust or write a note 2- identify the trouble that is causing the cutting 3- ask for help 4- work on it/ find other ways to cope

Teen Suicide Fact: Suicide is the third leading cause of death in US for teens age 15-19. The rate of suicide has nearly tripled in the last 30 years. Why?

What to do: Take them seriously Do not give advice or judge them Do not allow yourself to be sworn to secrecy Listen! Encourage them to go to a trusted teacher, counselor, or adult
