Mythology: our definition (4 th ) Story passed through generations Story which may or may not be true Story told like it’s true. People believe story even though they know it’s a story. Big Foot Slender Man Hercules Lochness Monster Abominable Snowman Santa Claus Tooth Fairy, etc. Medusa Cupid and Psyche

Mythology: our definition (5 th ) A story made to explain something or answer a question A story/legend that has not been proved true. Something people believe to be true but it isn’t proved. Santa Claus Lochness Monster Greek Gods Bermuda Triangle Mermaids Pandora’s Box Dragons Monsters (Goblins, Vampires, Werewolves, Dwarves, Elves, etc.) Aliens (Gremlins, Trolls, etc.)

Mythology: our definition (6 th ) Story made up with a moral or a point behind it. Story that has been told but has not been proven true. An event that is said to have occurred but many think is impossible. Lochness Monster Big Foot Supernatural Beings (werewolves, vampires, etc.) Abominable Snowman Yeti Paul Bunyan Oedipus Santa Claus

Myths: why? Write down: Every different culture, ancient and new, has mythology. Why? What role does mythology play in a culture? What does a myth DO for a culture?

Helps understand things we don’t know; teaches lessons Gives reasons to something that can not be explained Explains ways of thinking or points of view Helps find answers to questions by answering WHY or HOW. Passed down from generations to understand things as time progresses Gives us reasons to research things

Covers: How people are supposed to overcome problems in their lives How to “grow up” How to become a good person, how to be a better person

What does it cover? List as many things as you can. Use the back if you run out of space.

Write a myth: Write a myth explaining gravity: Should be a story (once upon a time…) Should be something a small child would understand Should NOT be “correct” or scientific. Pretend you know nothing about how gravity actually works. You will need 4 highlighters tomorrow!
