Pituitary Gland Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands Adrenal Glands Testes

Pineal gland Thymus gland Pancreas Ovaries

Pituitary Gland (growth; regulates other glands) Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands (regulate metabolism and calcium levels) Adrenal Glands (stress response) Testes (reproductive system; growth and development)

Pineal gland (releases melatonin) Thymus gland (immune system; T-cell maturation) Pancreas (regulates blood glucose) Ovaries (reproductive system; growth and development)

What is a hormone? Hormones are chemical messengers carried by the blood from endocrine glands where they are produced to the cells upon which they act.

Some effects of hormones include: –regulation of growth, metabolism, and the immune system –preparation for a new activity such as fighting, fleeing, or mating –preparation for a new phase of life such as puberty, caring for offspring, or menopause –controlling the reproductive cycle

What is the relationship between a hormone and a target cell? Target cells are the cells that are influenced by the hormones. Example: High blood glucose levels cause the pancreas to secrete insulin which tells the liver cells to store glucose. –People with Type I diabetes cannot produce insulin.

Endocrine glandHormone(s) SecretedHormone Function(s) Adrenal gland -Cortisol -Androgen -Adrenaline -metabolism -sex drive -stress response Pancreas -Insulin -Glucagon -Regulate blood glucose levels

Endocrine glandHormone(s) SecretedHormone Function(s) Ovaries -Estrogen -Progesterone -Development of eggs and secondary sexual characteristics -Preparation of uterus for fertilized egg Testes -Testosterone -Sperm production -Development of secondary sexual characteristics

Endocrine glandHormone(s) SecretedHormone Function(s) Hypothalamus -Growth hormone releasing hormone -regulate the amount of growth hormone Thymus -Thymopoietin-Immune response (T cell development)

Endocrine glandHormone(s) SecretedHormone Function(s) Parathyroid -Parathyroid hormone -regulates blood calcium levels Thyroid -thyroxine-Regulates metabolism

Endocrine glandHormone(s) SecretedHormone Function(s) Pineal -melatonin-circadian rhythm (day/night) Pituitary -Prolactin -oxytocin -growth hormone -milk production -childbirth -growth
