Pituitary Gland Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands Adrenal Glands Testes
3
Pineal gland Thymus gland Pancreas Ovaries
4
Pituitary Gland (growth; regulates other glands) Thyroid and Parathyroid Glands (regulate metabolism and calcium levels) Adrenal Glands (stress response) Testes (reproductive system; growth and development)
5
Pineal gland (releases melatonin) Thymus gland (immune system; T-cell maturation) Pancreas (regulates blood glucose) Ovaries (reproductive system; growth and development)
8
What is a hormone? Hormones are chemical messengers carried by the blood from endocrine glands where they are produced to the cells upon which they act.
9
Some effects of hormones include: –regulation of growth, metabolism, and the immune system –preparation for a new activity such as fighting, fleeing, or mating –preparation for a new phase of life such as puberty, caring for offspring, or menopause –controlling the reproductive cycle
10
What is the relationship between a hormone and a target cell? Target cells are the cells that are influenced by the hormones. Example: High blood glucose levels cause the pancreas to secrete insulin which tells the liver cells to store glucose. –People with Type I diabetes cannot produce insulin.
