Don’t Bore Your Visitors ….They’re not gonna stay if you do so

Giving your website the WOW factor Being able to create an amazing website isn't as complicated as you think. Even a simple design can make a website look good and interesting. Knowing how to “Wow” your visitors can be as simple as choosing the right font, background and colors or it could be as complex as adding personalize animation or movement. A good look and feel on a website gets your visitors in a proper mood which indirectly makes the website more appealing to them. This is important because an appealing website would make a visitor revisit your website. There are many factors that could make your website look dull and boring, such as lengthy paragraphs, messy, unattractive layout and colors. So what does it take to create an interesting and appealing website?

Analysis/Review of the Article A good site should keep their viewers interested Should have a natural flow Design to be simple yet interesting A site should download quickly, easy to read and navigate to be straight-forward

HUMANS LIKE TO RELATE Ability to create what is not there Based on a psychological approach, as stated above is from the article and from the point of view of a reader it is true Makes it easier to understand

HUMANS LIKE TO LOOK AT OBJECTS AND MAKE A CONNECTION Likes to group things together Easier to mange our thoughts From a personal point of view, it is however true that we tend to create our own groups when reading as it is easier to remember in groups, understand easier and also, easier to read as it naturally flows

How Not To Bore Your Online Visitors Few basic steps and guidelines: Good use of color Text that is easily read Meaningful graphics Quality photography Simplicity

MY EYES!! Website such as this would make visitors never want to visit the website again. Color combination is TERRIBLE, everything is MESSY, CONFUSING and UNREADABLE. What's with all the faces anyway, no one really cares about who sells the item, it’s the item that they care about. You should not be using too many different types of font on a single page either. This website looks like it was designed by a pre-school student. Matching your business theme to your website is very important. http://www.lingscars.com

Now That’s better This and the previous website is almost identical when it comes to its services, but has totally opposite layout designs. There is GOOD USE OF COLOR, there is QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHY and it has TEXT THAT IS EASILY READ. Layout design and colors are simple but appealing, this would make it easy on the eyes. If you were trying to hire a car online, which company/website would you choose? http://www.europcar.co.uk

http://www.gatesnfences.comwww.gatesnfences.com BORINGGG Here we have a classic example of a BORING website. Just by looking at it makes us mentally lethargic. When there is too many words on a single page, people will lose interest. SIMPLICITY. Keep sentences short and simple. If long explanations are required on your website, spread it out on different pages so that users can navigate to the information they need without having to dig through lots of text they aren’t interested in.

“Easy to read, navigation is straightforward”. SIMPLICITY. That is what this website is based on. By using simple but MEANINGFUL GRAPHICS AND TEXT this website is visually appealing, polished and professional. An attractive website would likely generate a positive impression on your company. 12 What is the criteria of a good website?

General criteria and people opinion of a good website Attracting colours Easy navigation/ interface Simple and classy Social media Include (contacts) Strong content Easy to read

“Don’t make them wait” A common problem among websites We all have been into websites which take a substantial amount of time to load. Sometimes it can be annoying, sometimes it can slow down our search information. And when it finally loads, it lags out. The one page you loaded is equivalent to five pages content.

As students of Interactive media. In our opinion, we agree that making our website, short, simple, classy and easy to load is crucial to leaving a good impression on our website viewers or visitors. < Click link to view arguments

+ Because of its simplicity, basic background colour. It takes less time for the website to load. Benefits + No background image or graphics on the website. Reduces excessive bandwidth.

Cons - Too simple for design fanatics and for some viewers

Example of websites interface with slower loading speed (Website with graphics) http://www.hybridworks.jp/

+ More than 216 colours have been used, bringing attractive visual to the website Benefits + The use of graphic means better enhancement of website’s features

Cons - Like the argument mentioned, more than 216 colours will make your website low to load - Graphic with more than 10 k space was used

DIY. Comparison test Click on the first link on the simple website section and the first link on graphic website section above. Link : http://www.designchapel.com/ http://www.hybridworks.jp/

If you are using fast connection, you will still find the second website takes more time to load ( 4 to 6 seconds) Results

Plausible solutions Argument : - Use solid colours, avoid using a lot of colours (Agree) - Check image space, don’t exceed more than 6k (Agree ) This link explains our standings and why : http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutorials/web_graphics/consiste nt-colors-for-your-site-all-you-need-to-know-about-web-safe- colors.html

Find Out What Colours!

COLOURCOLOUR Colours have an emotional meaning. Often this meaning varies from person to person but there are some common reactions associated with each color. Colour play a big role in attracting audience.

I do agree with the author that colour is the key for a good website design. According to Touro College Journal the article state that colour can deeply influences the overall look and feel of a website and can form the first impression about a company for visitors. In web design, color is just as important as the basic structure and navigational design. Everything color-related, from your logo to your background and buttons, can be designed to enhance the user experience, create familiarity and reflect your brand’s essence effectively. Colour is a tricky thing. You have to use it in the right way, at the right time, with the right audience, and for the right purpose.

Brighter colors lead the user to feel more energetic, which is particularly effective when you are trying to advertise a product or invoke an emotional response. People associate yellow with sun, because it gives out warmth and happiness.

Yellow's global similarities are significant: Almost every country yellow represents sunshine, happiness, and warmth. Yellow is the color of traffic lights and signs indicating caution all over the world.

Red can catches people’s attention, and can be used either in a negative and positive way, to indicate danger and emergency.

RED Pros Grab visitors attention and to get visitor to take action to show speed combined with confidence It is associated with passion, power, determination and boldness. Use in restaurant web sites because it is an appetite stimulant. Cons It can be used for warnings or to show danger

Navigation ….Where am I? Where can I go from here?.... Where was I already?....

Regarding the issue stated by designmore.com saying that the navigation is bar is an important element for a website.

Don’t make people feel lost in your webpage

Without a good navigation bar is like losing a on the road

A good website should have: Name or logo of your company along with a name should be on top of every page in your website. Company name of logo should be also link back to your home page. Must be able to tell which page visitors are on all the time.

Example of GOOD navigation bars Fixed navigation website layout Navigation bar with context A clear navigation will immediately make the audience understand what the site is about. The navigation uses icons with text to make it easier for the audience to figure out where to go.

Example of BAD navigation bars Too many links Link is not stationary all over the place Ask the question: “If I was visiting this website for the first time, would it be easy for me to navigate this website?”
