What’s In A Name?  Names today do not foretell who a person will be or what he will do  Names in Bible times meant something with regard to a person’s character or role in life  Eve – the mother of all living  Abraham – the father of a multitude  Jesus – save his people from their sins

Isaiah 9:6  Wonderful Counselor: he takes care of the decisions in my life  Mighty God: he takes care of the demands in my life  Everlasting Father: he takes care of the desires in my life  Prince of Peace: he takes care of the disturbances in my life

Wonderful  Even in our modern world of technology, many people are bored, depressed, lonely; life is dull for many  Many people live with disappointment from problems; become cynical  We live in a mechanical/technological world; we live in a commercial world; we live in a busy world; we live in an artificial world

Wonderful  Everything about Jesus is wonderful: virgin birth, youthful answers, sinless life, authoritative teaching, wonderful miracles, astonishing claims, atoning death, miraculous resurrection, glorious ascension  Jesus is unique and different, so many people were astonished, amazed, surprised, awed; they wondered at him (Mt. 15:31; 21:15; Lk. 2:18; 4:22; Acts 2:22)

Counselor  Where people turn for help and guidance is an indicator of their character and faith: a bar, drugs, psychologist, friends, fortune-teller, etc.  We cannot direct ourselves (Jer. 10:23; 17:9)  God’s counsel is different (Isa. 55:8), the highest (Rom. 11:34), and cannot be overthrown (Acts 5:38-39)

Counselor  God is a wonderful counselor (Isa. 25:1; 28:29)  God gives us his counsel (Acts 20:27)  God will give us wisdom (Jas. 1:5)  Jesus is qualified to be our counselor: he is deity (Col. 2:9), he is man (Heb. 2:17-18), he is caring (Jn. 14:1), and he prays for us (Jn. 17:20; Heb. 7:25)

Counselor  Jesus is wise (Isa. 11:2)  Jesus is greater than Solomon (Mt. 12:42)  Jesus has all wisdom (Lk. 21;15; 1 Cor. 1:30; Col. 2:3)  Jesus counsels erring Christians (Rev. 3:18)

Jesus: Wonderful Counselor  We need the wonder of Jesus in our life (Heb. 2:9; 1 Jn. 1:1-3)  We need the counsel of Jesus in our life (Jn. 6:68)  When we are in wonder of Jesus, we will let him be our counselor!
