After FactFinder: The future of data dissemination at Census Bureau December 17, 2015 1

Yes, FactFinder is going away  FactFinder scheduled for “retirement” in 2017  This presentation is about what comes next 2

What is CEDSCI?  CEDSCI = Census Bureau’s Center for Enterprise Dissemination Services and Consumer Innovation  CEDSCI is looking to centralize and standardize the data, metadata, and software needed to build dissemination tools and provide easy access to public use content to improve the users’ experience. 3

Future vision  Current situation: Census Bureau has several public data tools -- AFF, Quick Facts, Easy Stats, DataFerrett, others. All with their own data and metadata databases, infrastructure, software. Duplication exists in many of these systems.  Future vision:  1. Centralizing and standardizing, thus reducing data and systems management burden. Efficiency benefits!  2. Taking a customer focused approach to dissemination. 4

CEDSCI, the new platform  How? – At the Bureau, CEDSCI will provide the platform for publication of public data:  Centralized Data and Metadata Repository  Centralized Services  Tables  Maps  Search  Visualizations  All new data tools and apps deployed by Census Bureau will utilize CEDSCI services.  Should be simple to end users. New tools and apps will be marketed simply as Census.gov 5

Use and Adoption  Replacing existing disparate data tools  Continue to develop unique and specialized tools for different audiences, but all new tools will use the CEDSCI platform for development. 6

The topic, geography, year and survey/program selection areas are filtered to only include values that are applicable to the search term. Business rules will determine the appropriate values to return. Customers are able to search directly from Census.gov and get relevant content, data tables, statistics, videos, publications, and images.

Alpha Phase 2: Features 20

Alpha Phase 2: Features cont. 21

Data access innovation outside the Bureau as well  10 years ago: Census introduced “deep links” as a feature of its website. All the parameters needed to call a table could be included in the URL  Since 2012: Extending that idea, Census now has over a dozen API services (that is, software-to- software services) that can be plugged in to an external developer’s own website and apps. 22
