Specific Woodshop Regulations Don’t be a knob twister. Keep hands off of all controls, switches, and knobs unless using the machine. The dust collector must always be turned on before using the machines. Never leave a machine while it is running or coasting. Wait until the machine is at a dead stop before leaving it. All students are to assist in shop clean up.
17
Class is dismissed by the instructor. Do not handle projects which do not belong to you. All projects to be made in the shop must be approved by the instructor. Project idea booklets are never to be taken from the shop. Be sure all tools are sharp and in good condition before using them.
18
Never talk to a student who is operating a machine. You may distract him/her, therefore causing him/her to be injured. NEVER “yell” in the shop at any time. A good rule to follow when using a machine is to keep your eyes on the cutter head. Never cut round stock (dowels, broom handles) on any machine. Use a hacksaw and a bench vise. All adjustments must be made on any machine only when the power is off and the machine is at a dead stop.
19
Great care must be taken to see that all lumber is free from nails, sand, paint, glue, or loose knots before being machined. Stock must never be forced into a machine faster than it will cut. Electrical cords on all portable machines must be disconnected before changes or adjustments are made. Examples: changing router cutters, sanding belts, drills, etc. Hand tools, portable machines, and other equipment, when temporarily not in use, must be kept on the benches at the center of bench.
20
Dull hand tools, saw blades, cutter heads, knives, shaper knives, router cutters, etc. are more hazardous to use than sharp ones, and should never be used. All lumber and plywood must be returned and stored properly in racks so that it will not fall or be left on the floor for someone to trip on. Return all clamps to the rack when not in use. All wrenches and other tools must be removed from machines before power is turned on.
21
Students are not allowed in the instructor’s office or desk. No project is to leave the shop without a payment receipt from the office.
22
Finishing Room Safety All oily rags must be placed in the proper safety container. If left open, they could ignite because of spontaneous combustion resulting in a damaging fire. All cans of finishing materials must be kept tightly closed and stored in the proper cupboards when not in use. Flammable vapor from these materials could cause an explosion. Many of these materials are toxic, and should not be inhaled.
23
All solvent used for cleaning brushes, spray guns, and other equipment must be placed in the proper waste container. Spray and finishing rooms must be kept clean and free of waste paper, scraps of wood, etc, AT ALL TIMES. Counter and other working surfaces must be left clean after using. Rubber gloves should be worn when using wood bleach or other caustic solutions. Also when staining to keep stain off hands.
24
No liquids, other than water, should be poured into the sink. Always obtain permission from the instructor before entering the paint room. A maximum of three students in the room at one time. The exhaust fan in the spray booth should be used when in the finishing room at all times.
