Linux 7.3 Migration S. O’Neale Review Feedback –Lots of machines running 7.3 –Certification started well –Then what went wrong ? –Suggestions for overall improvement –One gripe per contributor –Some further suggestions in OPAL talk –Repairing the damage

Lxplus7 and batch delivered For the major physics programming languages redhat version is not optimal (fit for use ?) Delivered fortran/c/c++ 2.95.2 and 3.2 Most experiments validated 2.95.2 Not yet completed 3.2 No show stoppers expected. Physicists need more than this.

Certification (7.3) Started well with dependency diagrams Status table and certification team No trace of numerous reported problems Submitted status changes not updated 7.2 to 7.3 was not minor corrections LEP (non-lhc) effectively excluded Atlas (and ?) took a world-wide view Obviously the team members never logged on to lxplus.

Certification Committee ? Committee to define the process Team to implement the process Committee to recruit implementers. We need more manpower to restore a decent linux working environment EACH experiment (except Alice ?) cannot take on all this work.

My Big Idea For each “product” –Need simple user documentation –Location (path) – (don’t change) –Installation Options (sum expts) –Sensible defaults –Description of new features (and Installation packaging). Continuity if dropped by RedHat.

Contributed Gripes Path (Delphi) LSF (LHCb) Perl (OPAL) Java (Atlas) Login – Look and Feel (Me) “too much” (Roger HelpDesk)

Path Changes Change path for all production (acrontab) tasks. Just as you cannot combine geant3 and pythia and get correct physics, eventually you will hit a clash without providing the full path.

LSF Documentation – how to submit to linux6 or linux7 The 234 page manual says “in the usual way” I know as I read expt.support It IS missing from the pretty good intro Number of machines on 6 and 7.

PERL Scripting language for production system and dbm access. 5 versions of rh 6.1 3 versions on rh 7.2 Inconsistent features Requested features for dbm access No response (no manpower)

What are my options Install “my” perl ? Use Pedrag’s Alien version –(swap with NA49 fatmen/tms) Use Torre’s LCG option Gave up and spent a week re-coding –(missed atlas 5.3.0 deadline), Then the extensions mysteriously appeared on lxplus7

Java Simple access request (NOT JDK) IT Management Failure Rare error from atlas support AFS expert knows the command but who to ask ? Security Officer --  Atlas could probably find a contributor

Logging On – Look and Feel Problem reporting black hole –Atypical sample as atlas took opal environment at UMTF time (Roger Jones). –Back to lxplus6 until it is fixed –Miss new useful features –Hepix (update AT paper please ?) –Uco script fails, –Xterm (telnet style) Investigate myself

HelpDesk From Roger, (other inputs from focus members and expt helplines). ftp + telnet + alias migration too much at The same time. Useful web page (url on login).

Repairing the Damage See Alien kidnappers One bad day (alias migration day) A week for perl dbm A day for paths Not yet finished repairs from sudden web changes Lost physics paper distribution (rexx) Lost atlas mail/news (mhonarc)
