JOEL A. ROGERS (1883-1966)

Biography Joel rogers emigrated to the U.S. in 1906 and became a naturalized citizen in 1917. By the 1930s and 1940s he was writing history columns in a few black newspapers like Pittsburgh Courier, Messenger, Crisis, Mercury, and the New York Amsterdam News. In 1940 one of Roger’s works (The Suppression of Negro History) was introduced in the black newspaper titled Crisis. Roger’s works were focused on anti-racism, he used many universal humanity themes. After he died in 1966 his wife Helga Rogers continued to publish her husband’s works for many years after his death.

HOW DOES IT RELATE TO THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE? As you can see the tittle of the essay is “Jazz at Home”. Jazz was a very big part of the Harlem Renaissance because it was a time where African Americans were seen as people and were appreciated because of their practices and talents.
