2  The direct object is a noun or pronoun that follows an ACTION VERB.  It receives the action of the verb.  And answers the questions whom or what? For example: Billy threw the ball. What did Billy throw? _______ D.O. The ball.

3  You can have one direct object or you can also have a compound direct object. For example: Television shows require writers and directors.  Just like with the subject, your direct object will only be one word unless it is the name of someone or something and is capitalized. ____________________ D.O.

4  If there is a direct object after the action verb, then it is a transitive verb. Example: Writers prepare scripts.  If there is not a direct object after the action verb then it is an intransitive verb. Example: Some people laugh loudly. ________________________ D.O. ____________________ Adv.

5  Also remember that your subject, verb, and direct object will NEVER be in a prepositional phrase.  It might be helpful to find the prepositional phrases, so that it will be easier to spot the direct object.

6 1. Susan hates pizza. 2. The author wrote a novel and a play. 3. All performers must know their parts. 4. The policeman slowly directed traffic. 5. Do you have a new sweater? *Hint: change the question to a statement. You do have a new sweater.

7 6. Eat your spinach and peas. *Hint, your subject is an implied you. 7. The sweet applesauce attracted ants and roaches. 8. The treasure hunters discovered several valuable gold coins. 9. We watched the movie. 10. The black horse crossed the finish line. (You)
