Lesson Plan for 5 th Grade Water Cycle By: Dawson Smith and Cayge Allen

What the Water Cycle is made up of? The water cycle is made up of four main parts: Evaporation and Transpiration, Condensation, Precipitation, and Accumulation.

Evaporation and Transpiration Evaporation is when the heat from the sun warms up the water and turns it into water vapor. Water even evaporates from plants. When it does this that is called transpiration. Plants, such as trees, lose water from their leaves after they have absorbed water from the ground. Transpiration helps keep plants cool in the same way that perspiration keep animals, and humans cool.

Condensation You should have already learned that condensation turns water vapor back to a liquid that forms clouds. This process is part of the water cycle. Water vapor condenses into the atmosphere to form clouds. Condensation occurs when the temperature of the air declines causing cloud formation. When all of the clouds form and collect all of the water and can’t hold anymore that is when the clouds will release the water and that will make It rain, which what you guys are learning right now is precipitation.

Precipitation Precipitation which you already know from reading about Condensation is that when clouds can’t hold anymore water then it will release it into the atmosphere and form either rain, hail, snow, sleet, or freezing rain. All you really need to know is that precipitation brings the water back to the ground where it was from the start.

Accumulation There is one last step before accumulation occurs is called runoff. All the runoff does is after the water comes back into the atmosphere it goes into the oceans or rivers, or any water source of any kind and then the water cycle begins to start over again.
