3. Jesus ’ teaching on the Holy Spirit and mission A good gift “ Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! ” (Luke 11:11-13)

4. A companion and helper … “ And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. ” (John 14:16-18) … who ensures we remember the Gospel … “ But the Counsellor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. ” (John 14:26)

5. … and is our ally in mission “ When the Counsellor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. ” (John 15:26-27) Aiding us when we are challenged … “ When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say. ” (Luke 12:11-12)

6. … as we surely will be “ But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counsellor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. ” (John 16:7-11)

7. He gives us words of knowledge “ I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. ” (John 16:12-13) The disciples needed more teaching on “ proclamation ” than “ presence ”….

8. They knew Jesus ’ manifesto … “ The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord ’ s favour. ” (Luke 4:18- 19)

9. … and had seen it in practice first-hand “ he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. ” (Luke 9:1-2) “ The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “ Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name. ”” (Luke 10:17)

10. We, like they, are sent out, anointed by the Spirit “ Again Jesus said, “ Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you. ” And with that he breathed on them and said, “ Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. ” (John 20:21-22)

11. ..on our joint mission to the whole world “ The Spirit and the bride say, “ Come! ” And let him who hears say, “ Come! ” Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. ” (Revelation 22:17
