Jam Writing & Informal Writing

Writing Students tend to stop writing to edit frequently. The “English lie” …good writing=good grammar Good writing=a good idea! Begin by “Jam writing”.

Jam Writing Just write! No editing. Don’t stop writing, even when you’re tired! Explore your brain and ideas… Look for a good idea and throw out bad ones. Nobody will see “Jam writing” except you! “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”—E.M. Forster

Jam Writing: Usage After you have a good idea, start looking at form. After form is decided, look at audience. Write a first draft. Begin the editing process. Share your piece with the intended audience.

Informal Writing Informal Writing (ie. poetry) is for a broad audience. Formal writing (ie. 5-paragraph essay) is for a small (often 1 person) audience—designed to check your learning. Informal writing like fiction, drama, and poetry are best created through sharp mental images of people or scenes and have conflict. Emulate, but don’t imitate your favorite writers. Dialogue should be fresh and seem real.
