VIRGINIA QUAKE 8/23/11 Situation: 40 miles Northwest of Richmond, 100 miles to the southwest of Washington DC "A magnitude 5.5 eastern U.S. earthquake usually can be felt as far as 500 kilometers [300 miles] from where it occurred, and sometimes causes damage as far away as 40 kilometers [25 miles]," according to the USGS.
