1 The Traveling Quilt Project

2 What is the Traveling Quilt Project? The quilt represents the connection classrooms across America make while learning about the famous Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska. Many schools are sharing lessons from their classrooms by adding to the traveling scrapbook and creating quilt squares to be used in next year’s quilt.

3 Now take a few minutes to complete the quilt scavenger hunt.

5 The Iditarod is a race that started in Alaska. The Iditarod is 1049 miles long and the teams consist of 18 teams of 12 dogs and one musher. The race first started in 1973 and the trail was use in the 1920’s by early settlers looking for gold in mines.

6 A race that’s held in Anchorage, Alaska and starts the first Saturday in March 1,049 miles long Each team must have 12 dogs and no more than 16 dogs A prize of 50,000 dollars Has 20 check points Can go on for more than 15 days!

7 Other Facts: The Junior Iditarod is a140 mile race for mushers ages 14 to 17. Rick Swenson is the only 5 time winner of the Iditarod. Libby Riddles is the first woman to win the Iditarod in 1985. The last person to cross the finish line receives the Red Lantern award.

8 The State of Alaska Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867. It was a territory until 1959, when it became the 49 th state.

9 List 10 action verbs connected to racing a dog sled team across Alaska. You have 3 minutes to list 10 verbs with 3 or more syllables. On your mark, get set, GO!

10 List 10 adjectives to describe the ominous weather you might encounter during the race or the excitement of competition. Create mental pictures using words.

11 Write 4 sentences summarizing what you learned today about the quilt, the Iditarod, or the vocabulary terms. Include some of the verbs and adjectives from our listing activity. Examples: Verbs: to navigate, to collaborate, to discover, to organize Adjectives: ominous, adventurous
