2 In Ancient Egypt…  - baskets are one of the world’s oldest forms of craft, dating back to Neolithic period 5,000 B.C  baskets were made from spiraling coiling made from tightly wrapped bundles of fibers  -had functional role but also aesthetic role

3  -frequently adorned with ornamental or colored stitching  -geometric patterns such as Van Dyke and checkered were commons well as animal patterns  -dying the stitching, plaits, or threads is something that has carried on today

4 In Ancient Peru…  -textiles have been woven for nearly 3,000 years  -were mostly highly prized possessions after gold  -produced on back strap looms  -produced in refinement long before ceramics

5  Purposes:  -trading purposes  -commemorated attainment of certain societal rank (attaining adulthood)  -marked a person’s achievement or status
