In Ancient Egypt… - baskets are one of the world’s oldest forms of craft, dating back to Neolithic period 5,000 B.C baskets were made from spiraling coiling made from tightly wrapped bundles of fibers -had functional role but also aesthetic role

-frequently adorned with ornamental or colored stitching -geometric patterns such as Van Dyke and checkered were commons well as animal patterns -dying the stitching, plaits, or threads is something that has carried on today

In Ancient Peru… -textiles have been woven for nearly 3,000 years -were mostly highly prized possessions after gold -produced on back strap looms -produced in refinement long before ceramics

Purposes: -trading purposes -commemorated attainment of certain societal rank (attaining adulthood) -marked a person’s achievement or status
