Cassius Clay was born the date of January 17, 1942. Clay was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He was named after his father (Cassius Marcellus Clay Sr.). Young Clay’s father was a 19 th century abolitionist and politician. This means his father opposed to slavery. Clay was born a Christian but that soon changed.

Muhammad Ali AKA Cassius Clay converted to Islam from Christianity. He changed his name after joining the Nation of Islam in 1964 after converting to Sunni Islam in 1975. People who converted to Islam from Christianity like Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X did it because Islam was known as the religion of peace

As a young boy Cassius and his buddy went on their bikes to go see a play. After the play Cassius saw that his bike was missing. Cassius called the police. When they arrived he told them the bikes description, he also told of how he was going to punch the thief in the face. The cop heard this and told him to take boxing classes. Cassius and his brother would go almost every day to do some sparring with the officer. That is when he realized he loves boxing.

Muhammad Ali has become known as “The Greatest” boxer alive. His record stands at 56 wins and 5 losses, 37 of those fights were won by knock-out. Muhammad Ali is a legend in the sport of boxing

1942- Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr. was born 1960- Cassius wins a light-heavyweight gold medal 1964- Clay converts to Islam and becomes Muhammad Ali 1967- Ali sentenced to 5 years in prison 1970- Ali returned to the ring due to a loophole 1971- Ali is sent back to prison 1979- Ali retires from boxing 1980- Ali comes out of retirement to fight Larry Holmes 1984- Ali is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 1996- Ali ignites Olympic torch at Summer Olympics
