2 WESTWARD EXPANSION Objective: Students will examine some of the prevailing themes of westward expansion by constructing and interactive journal and studying vocabulary. Purpose: To preview the unit/chapter and study vocabulary prior to engaging in the source material. Standard(s): 1.9 - Students will analyze how different cultures, points of view, and self- interests influence compromise and conflict over territories, borders, and resources by utilizing one of the big 11 social studies skills. Historical Thinking Skill: Cause & Consequence.

3 WARM-UP: CNN STUDENT NEWS Write down facts as you watch the video. 1 point = 1 correctly written fact. I need to see at least (a minimum of) 5 facts. More facts may earn additional extra-credit points. What I want to see: Ex. The President was in Europe on Thursday. Give a thing, a place, and a time.

4 INTERACTIVE JOURNAL: EXPANSION I dentify and Describe Each 1800’s – Route used by settlers to reach Kentucky. 1811 – Missouri River  California. Significant during the California Gold Rush. 1821 – Santa Fe  California. Merchants used this route. Missouri  Santa Fe, NM 1846 – Illinois  Utah. Route Mormons used to travel westward. 1826 – Trade route between Santa Fe  Los Angeles, CA. 1842 – Route used by settlers to travel across the plains to Rocky Mountains. Illinois  Oregon.

5 INTERACTIVE JOURNAL: EXPANSION Chain of Events Leading to the Monroe Doctrine Napoleonic Wars: Napoleon was exiled and monarchic governments wanted to reassert power in Europe and South America. Russian Expansion: Russia pushing from Alaska down the coast of North America. Latin American Republics: Many countries in S. America broke away from their monarchies and are now republics. If European nations colonize or interfere in North or South America it would be treated as acts of aggression. The U.S. would not interfere with European countries or conflicts.
