It is a scaly red fish with yellow, orange eyes. It has a mouth shaped like a beak. River salmon are pink. Atlantic salmon are gray. Salmon look like tiny sharks. It looks a little like a trout.

In the summer, salmon go the place in the river where they were born to lay eggs. The babies stay in the river until they are ready to go out on there own. Atlantic salmon turn pink in fresh water. Chinook salmon look like the riverbed. Salmon spend their lives mostly in the ocean and in the rivers have their young.

Adult salmon eat krill, small fish, and shellfish. Bears, otters, ravens and other dead-fish eaters eat salmon. It is weird that all these animals eat them when they are dead instead of catching them. Frys are eaten by birds, insects, and other fish.

Salmon begin as eggs which turn into alevin. The alevin become fry. A fry turns into a parr which turns into a smolt. The smolt turns into an adult. Finally, the adult turns into a spawning adult.

Salmon die after they spawn. Salmon go to the start of the river to lay eggs. The King Salmon is the state fish of Alaska.
