2 Reaping a harvest from a salty land
3
3 Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, where 40% of people live in poverty.
4
4 Selina Begum, supported by Christian Aid partner Shushilan, works alongside her husband to cultivate saline-resistant rice seeds. Traditional seeds will no longer grow on their land, as it has been affected by salt water.
5
5 Selina hopes that, with the money she will earn from her harvest, she will be able to use the training in veterinary care she received from Shushilan and open an animal clinic.
6
6 Selina is determined that the salty soil and water affecting her community will not force her family from their home. ‘I will always stay here and adapt to changes. This is my own land, this is my locality, I don’t want to move from my home.’
7
7 Asha Bishwas has also found a new and different way to support her family.
8
8 Asha uses the training she received from Christian Aid partner Shushilan to raise crabs in protected ponds and sell them at market.
9
9 The money Asha makes selling crabs has enabled her to send her two children, Joyanti and Gopal, to school.
10
10 Asha’s name means ‘hope’. This harvest, give to Christian Aid so that other peope like Selina and Asha have renewed hope for their families
