Anatomical gingival parts Gingivitis Stages Course & duration Distribution Clinical features

Periodontium Definition: Tissues that invest & support the teeth.
Parts: Attachment apparatus including: periodontal ligament, cementum & alveolar bone. Gingiva
4
Gingiva Definition: Function: Protection of the underlying tissues.
It is part of the oral mucosa covering the alveolar processes of the jaws. Function: Protection of the underlying tissues.
5
Gingiva It is divided anatomically into: Interdental gingiva.
Marginal gingiva. Attached gingiva.
6
Normal Gingiva Color: Coral pink-pale pink/physiologically pigmented.
Contour: Collar like scalloping fashion. Consistency: Firm & resilient. Surface texture: Stippling.
7
Normal Gingiva Shape: Narrow & pointed or broad interdental papillae & knife edge gingival margins Position: Covers the entire root surface
8
Gingivitis Definition: It is the inflammation in the gingiva associated with the presence of oral microorganisms in the gingival sulcus.
9
Stages of Gingivitis Stage I: Initial lesion 2-4 days
Gingival fluid flow (subclinical) Stage II Early lesion 4 - 7 days erythema & BOP Stage III Established lesion days Changes in color, size, etc
10
Gingivitis (Course & Duration)
Acute gingivitis: Sudden onset, short duration & pain. Its less severe phase called sub-acute gingivitis. Recurrent gingivitis: Reappears after being eliminated by treatment or disappearing spontaneously. Chronic gingivitis: Is of slow onset, long duration & is painless.
