Chaouki Boulahouache 01/20, 2010 Slide 1 Static Vs. Dynamic Pedestals Chaouki Boulahouache Rice University DPG Meeting What are the effects of the static pedestals on the residuals? What are the effects of calibration on the residuals using the static pedestals?

Static vs. Dynamic Pedestals Chaouki Boulahouache Slide 2 Still using the SuperPointing skim of the CRAFT09 data… Cuts: 1) SUMQ(3x3) > 250 2) Estimated error of the position within strips < 0.2 3) |dx/dz| < 0.15 4) CSCLike Segments 5) Require 6 hits segments. For more information, these are links to previous talks with information on the cuts. http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=2&resId=1&materialId=slides&con fId=71472 http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=2&resId=1&materialId=slides&con fId=71472 http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=5&resId=1&materialId=slides&con fId=73695 http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access?contribId=5&resId=1&materialId=slides&con fId=73695 Reminder

Static vs. Dynamic Pedestals Chaouki Boulahouache Slide 4 Effect of the Static Pedestals Static pedestals greatly improve the residuals (biggest effect is ~ 30%). Applying the calibration using the dynamic pedestals does not affect the residuals. Applying the calibration using the static pedestals slightly worsens the residuals Calibration constants are obtained using dynamic pedestals?

Static vs. Dynamic Pedestals Chaouki Boulahouache Slide 5 Residuals versus the position within strip: we see the expected behavior, i.e. residuals are worse at the center of the strip and better at the edge. Similar results were obtained and soucmented in this note, by A. Drozdetskiy et al., CMS NOTE 2007/023. Thanks to Andrey for pointing me to the note. Residuals Vs Position Within Strip…

Static vs. Dynamic Pedestals Chaouki Boulahouache Slide 6 CSCRecHitD has the following two input configuration parameters: useCalib and useStaticPedestals. In principle they should be independent. But if useCalib == false and useStaticPedestals == true job crashes. Reason: no handle on the conditions database to get the pedestals. Solution void CSCRecHitDProducer::produce: add: if ( useCalib || useStaticPedestals) { recoConditions_->initializeEvent( setup ); } Remark: a correction needed for CSCRecHit code…

Static vs. Dynamic Pedestals Calibration constants do not improve the resolution when using dynamic or static pedestals BUT The use of static pedestals improves the resolution. Slide 7 Conclusion
