Example answer – giving interpretations and embedding supporting quotes and references The reader is prepared for Napoleon gaining complete power by the way that he and Snowball had ‘some violent debates’: ‘Snowball often won over the majority by his brilliant speeches, but Napoleon was better at canvassing support’. The fact that Napoleon gets the ‘support’ of the animals and was ‘especially successful with the sheep’ indicates that Napoleon will gain complete power, especially as the sheep were ‘liable to’ interrupt at ‘crucial moments in Snowball’s speeches’. Orwell indicates to the reader that Napoleon has no respect for Snowball or his plans: ‘he lifted his leg, urinated over the plans and walked out…’. This shows that Napoleon has no intention of leading the other animals with Snowball and that he wants to lead alone.
