2 The quote “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” From The Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson

3 1. Use your own words before the quote One of the American ideals presented in the Declaration of Independence and which Americans strive for today is the idea “that all men are created equal.”

4 2. Use your own words after the quote. “All men are created equal” is an American ideal that was clearly established in the Declaration of Independence in 1776 although it was not until 1863 that slavery was abolished with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

5 3. Place the quote in between your words. Although Jefferson proclaimed “that all men are created equal” in the Declaration of Independence in 1776, it was not until Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 that the slaves were freed.
