How to Collectively Bargain A step by step guide

Step 1 Define the problem Problems such as wages, hours of work, working conditions and grievance procedures could all be bargained for.

Step 2 Do internal research Find past records of data related to the problem, employer policies, union rhetoric. Etc. Do external research Research the current economic conditions, if applicable, as well as labour laws. &

Step 3 Educate your peers Inform your peers about the issues that arise, the roles of the part-takers in the problem and the process of how to solve the problem

Step 4 Create a negotiating team Form a team of negotiators who will properly represent the employees in the negotiation process.

Step 5 Set objectives Determine what it is that you and your negotiating team want to achieve by the end of the negotiating process.

Step 6 Develop proposals and alternatives Create realistic demands that you would present to the other party which help solve the problem and taking into account the worst case scenario.

Step 7 Select a strategy When negotiating with the other party, have a strategy ready on how to approach the problem which include the roles, behaviours and limits of both sides.

Step 8 Negotiate Exchange proposals with the other party explaining each demand, why you need the demands and documentation to back up your statement.

Step 9 Sign an agreement The contract must be in writing on behalf of both parties, and cannot be modified, altered or terminated with written consent.

Step 10 Enforce the terms of the agreement Make sure the terms of the agreement are enforced and applied soon after the negotiating period had ended.
