Family Abduction Statistics "Family kidnapping" accounts for nearly 50% of all child kidnappings. More than 300,000 family abductions occur in the U.S. each year. 163,000 of these cases involve the concealment of a child, transporting out of state, or intent to keep the child permanently. The child has experienced serious mental harm in 16% of the cases. The child has experienced physical abuse or harm in 24% of the cases. The child is sexually abused in 7% of the cases. Mothers flee with children in 54% of the cases. Fathers flee with children in 46% of the cases.

Other Abduction Types "Acquaintance kidnapping" (kidnapping by person(s) known to the family) account for over 25% of all child kidnappings. “Stranger kidnapping" accounts for nearly 25% of all child kidnappings. Victims of "stranger kidnappings" are found alive only 60% of the time. The number of missing persons has risen from just over 150,000 to over 800,000 in the last 20 years. Approximately 80% of non family abductions are sexually motivated.
