2
Objectives Have fun Experience (learn) a little about the brain Gain new perspectives for program development Paradigm shifts (perception & beliefs) (private logic) Gain some new “props” for connecting Take away some fun
3
Just the Facts….. Male adult brain 49 oz. (about 3 lbs.) Female adult brain 44 oz. 78% water 10% fat 8% protein Live brain is grayish 100 billion neurons (brain cells) Each neuron can connect to as many as 10,000 others Lose brain cells daily through attrition, decay, and lack of use…don’t worry it would take hundreds of years to lose your mind! It’s not a computer, it’s more like an ecosystem
4
Hierarchy of the Brain Neocortex Limbic Brain Stem
5
Hierarchy of the Brain Abstract thought Concrete thought Affiliation “Attachment” Sexual Behavior Emotional Reactivity Motor Regulation “Arousal” Appetite Sleep Blood Pressure Heart Rate Body Temperature Neocortex Limbic Midbrain/Cerebellum Brainstem
6
Hierarchy of the Brain Neocortex Limbic Brain Stem
7
The Lobes Frontal(Judgment, Creativity, Problem Solving, & Planning) Occipital(Vision) Parietal(Processes higher sensory & language functions) Temporal(Hearing, memory, meaning, & language) (left & right) The Fifth… Limbic(Emotions, sleep, attention, body regulation, hormones, sexuality, smell, & neurochemical production)
8
Areas of the Brain Frontal Lobe Parietal Lobe Occipital Lobe Temporal Lobe Cerebellum Spinal Cord Brain Stem
9
Functions Vision (Occipital Lobe) Coordination (Cerebellum) Perception (Parietal Lobe) Sensation (Sensory Cortex) Movement (Motor Cortex) Executive Function (Frontal Lobe) Memory, Understanding, & Language (Temporal Lobe)
10
Speech and Recognition Broca’s Area Involved in the formation of sentences Wernike’s Area Involved in the comprehension of speech
11
Limbic Area Olfactory Bulb Amygdala Hippocampus Limbic Lobe

Neuron
13
Neurons and Synapses
14
An Organizing Principle for Cerebral Function Jeff Hawkins – Redwood Neuroscience Intstitute Vernon Mountcastle – John Hopkins University in Baltimore The neocortex is remarkably uniform in appearance and structure – he proposes that the cortex uses the same computational tool to accomplish everything it does.
15
Neurons at Birth

21
Core Functions of the Brain Sense Process Store Perceive Act
22
Neocortical Memory Stores sequences of patterns (spatial & temporal) Recalls patterns auto-associatively Stores patterns in an invariant form Stores patterns in a hierarchy
23
Knowing Recognize Patterns Name Classify & Categorize Intelligence = Prediction To understand or to know is to be able to predict
25
The Brain’s SOCIOMETER
26
Get It?
27
Safety Belonging Achievement Power Purpose Adventure Brain Compatible Programming
28
Zeigarnik Effect We are hard-wired to solve problems. In fact, we love it! We keep searching for answers to unsolved problems. Concept – Bluma Zeigarnik
29
What’s important?
30
Hard-Wired to Connect Vasopressin (higher in males) Oxytocin (higher in females)
31
Universal Language of Emotions
32
Windows to the Soul
37
Hyperstress Pushing a person beyond what they can handle
38
Hypostress Non-challenging, bored, uninspired
39
Eustress… Positive Stress Short-term provides immediate strength Arises to motivate and inspire
41
Response to Threat Amygdala Visual Thalamus Visual Cortex THREAT
