2 Purpose/Literature Review Purpose To see if BMI directly correlates to heart health Is BMI accurate? BMI known to be a skewed number with athletes because of muscularity Literature Review “Athletes may have a high BMI because of increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness. In general, a person who has a high BMI is likely to have body fatness and would be considered to be overweight or obese, but this may not apply to athletes” [CDC, 2015].

4 Method/Learning Outcomes Method Cardiovascular tests were run to determine the difference in numbers between those with a low BMI and those with a high BMI Tests included: Max HR & Gender Adjusted Max HR Resting HR, Pulse Pressure, & Rate Pressure Product Estimated VO2 Max Learning Outcomes In this case, BMI had no effect on cardiovascular health. Numbers varied, but there were no drastic discrepancies based off of similar BMIs

5 Basic description of study/Unit of instruction The Basic explanation of the study was after recording data to run the data in a correlation with BMI to see if they had any type of correlation given the R value number. The closer to 1 the stronger the correlation. It can be negative or positive, and this will show whether there is a strong correlation or not.

6 Instrumentation/Assessment plan Instrumentation used included: Sphygmomanometer Stair master cardiovascular machine Assessment plan Take BMI of each participant Run cardiovascular testing Run correlation data for each individual test

7 Results/Analysis of data The first correlation was between BMI and Max heart rate, the correlation number is -0.04 showing that there appears to be no correlation between the two. The next correlation was BMI and Gender adjusted max heart rate this correlation was -0.07 showing again that there was appears to be relatively no correlation The next correlation stood out it was between BMI and Resting heart rate the correlation of these statistics was.85 which appears to be a very strong correlation showing them to be closely related. BMI and Estimated Vo2 Max was next and the correlation was -0.74 this appears to be a strong negative correlation. Finally was BMI and Rate Pressure Product correlation which was 0.51 which appears to be a moderate correlation.

8 Discussion/Instructional Decision Making After reviewing the data, it appears that using BMI is not very effective for measuring cardiovascular strength. However, the study did show that BMI does correlate strongly with a good resting heart rate. The correlations were somewhat split with two of them being strong, one moderate, and three of them irrelevant.

9 Next Steps/Evaluation & reflection It was found that BMI only correlates with some of the data and is not a reliable source of heart health measurement.
