Selfishness One who thinks of himself first. Often he hoards and doesn’t share Luke 15:25-32, the prodigal’s brother Galatians 5:20, work of the flesh Philippians 2:3-4, 1 Corinthians 13:5 Causes one to neglect others Views others with improper perspective Can lead to ungodly conduct

Pride and arrogance Pride – thinks more highly of himself than he ought to Arrogance – an attitude of superiority toward others Naaman 2 Kn. 5:11-13, Haman – Esther, Nebuchadnezzar, Pharisee – Luke 18:11 Proverbs 8:13, 16:18 1 Cor. 13:4, Rom. 12:3, Phil. 2:3 – lowliness of mind Causes one to talk down to others Hinders opportunities to teach Can cause avoidance Unattractive

Bitterness An attitude that is sharp, harsh and antagonistic, resentment, etc. Can cause great damage Cain Genesis 4:5-8 Simon the magician Acts 8:23 Jonah Jonah 4 Ephesians 4:31, James 3:14 Causes one to act harshly toward others Look at others with jaded perspective An unpleasant demeanor Proverbs 22:24

Envy and Jealousy A feeling of discontent or covetousness toward the advantages of others. Resentful Sarah and Hagar, Rachel and Leah, Joseph’s brothers King Saul and David 1 Sam. 18-19 Matthew 27:18 Galatians 5:21, James 3:14-16 1 Peter 2:1, Romans 13:13 Damages relationships and trust Can cause one to turn against others Can consume you

Overly critical One constantly looking for what is wrong with others There is a place for “legitimate” criticism by one who is QUALIFIED! Proper experience, attitude and motives Jesus was criticized often – Matt. 12:2, John 9:14-16 Moses criticized – Num. 16, 12:1-2 1 Corinthians 13:6, Eph. 4:31 James 1:19 He sows discord Can cause others to not seek answers or discuss things Often makes others uncomfortable!

Calloused Hardened, uncaring in words and demeanor Hardened heart – Luke 8:12, Hebrews 3:13, 1 Tim. 4:2 Pharaoh an example Exodus 8:15, 4:21 Christians are to care - 1 Cor. 13:4-5, 1 Peter 3:8 Will do little good with others Leads to many of previous attitudes More likely to turn others away than win them

Grumpiness, ill-willed Bad tempered, sulky, surly. While not directly mentioned in the Bible, it is contrary to attitudes we ought to have Examples: Nabal (Abigail) 1 Sam. 25:3, 17, 24-25 King Saul and his distressing spirit 1 Sam. 16:14, 19:9 Does this portray Jesus favorably? Does this demonstrate joy? James 5:9, Phil. 2:14-15, 1 Pet. 3:8 Describes one that is unpleasant to be around. Often he is not kind with others Describes one that is unpleasant to be around. Christians ought to live so that others are at ease around us (as a rule) We all face difficulties at times, but even then, we CAN STILL control our attitude around others
