3 Infrastructure zFiber Optic backbone complete to nearly all buildings, including all residence halls ySpeed of the Academic network (including residence halls) increasing from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps, summer 1999 zInterior network wiring and Internet connection complete for nearly all buildings (- studio art, music, and dance) yFour residence halls wired summer, 1999

5 Computing and Networking in the Residence Halls zAll student rooms have Ethernet jacks, with connection to the Internet zStudent needs a computer with an Ethernet card. zWells will install and configure the card in an “Installation Fair” at beginning of term.

6 Purchasing a New Computer zAll students are encouraged to bring a computer and printer, but can also use public computing facilities zIf purchasing a computer: yable to run Windows 95/98 or Mac OS 8.x y64 MB RAM or above yinstalled Ethernet card a plus zLaptops have some advantages yCan connect from jacks in Library, etc.

7 Public Computing Facilities for Students zNine general computer labs in academic buildings and residence halls y51 PCs, 22 Macintoshes = 73; most new in 1999 (450 MHz Pentium IIs/IIIs; translucent Mac G3s) zHigh-speed laser printers in all labs zAll computers on the Internet, with Email and Web capability zAdditional specialized labs (e.g. digital video and photography; social sciences)

8 Hardware and Software Standards in Computer Labs zDual platform (PC / Macintosh) zPC standards: yWindows 95/98 yMicrosoft Office 97 Professional zMacintosh standards: yMac OS 8.x yMicrosoft Office 98 zAll lab computers have Zip drives zAdobe Photoshop in all Macmillan labs

9 Computing for Instruction and Presentations zFourteen classroom computer/video presentation systems with computer, projection system, and sound zSome installed in advance in classrooms and auditoriums; most portable (on carts) so can be used in any classroom zMost student presentations now done with a computer (e.g. PowerPoint)

10 Email Access zEmail accounts are set up in advance for all incoming students. zAt Orientation student merely signs a form and picks up her password zTraining sessions on using email offered at Orientation zMost addresses will have the form: jdoe@wells.edu
