Protagonist The main character of a literary narrative around whom the events of the narrative's plot revolve and with whom the audience is intended to share the most empathy. Also referred to as a Hero (males) or Heroine (females) Examples: Harry Potter Batman Superman

Antagonist A character or a group of characters that represents the opposition against which the protagonist must contend Also referred to as the villain Examples: Edmund -- Shakespeare's King Lear Dracula -- Stoker’s Dracula Simon Legree -- Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin Voldemort -- Harry Potter

Foil A character who contrasts with another character (usually the protagonist) in order to highlight various features of that other character's personality Examples: In Othello, Emilia is a foil for Desdemona. In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is a foil for Romeo. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Biddy serves as a foil for Estella.
