IMAGES OF LIGHT AND DARK
2
HOW IT’S PRESENTED Light and dark are both presented through light/sun rays trying to penetrate the darkness Shown on things like walls, windows, valley. Reflect whether good thing happens (light) or bad things happens (dark) Light and darkness used to focus the reader’s attention to a main area of action
3
CROOKS "In the stable buck's room, a small electric globe threw a meagre yellow light” – shows that he doesn’t want much attention “MEAGRE” Skin Tone ”eyes lay deep in his head, and because of their depth seemed to glitter with intensity" Combination of Light and Dark, shows Crooks’ pride (e.g. clean room)
4
CURLEY’S WIFE Rectangle of sunshine gets cut off when she is introduced – shows that she is a dark/evil aspect in the novel "I've never seen no piece of jailbait worse than her” – experience "The sun streaks climbed up the wall" Before Curley’s wife dies, that light is coming back after darkness goes
5
LENNIE "Already the sun had left the valley to go climbing up the slopes of the Gabilan Mountains, and the hill tops were rosy in the sun" - Before Lennie's captors caught him. Similar use of fading light is used before the killing of Candy’s dog
6
NATURE “The flame of the sunset lifted from the mountaintops and dusk came into the valley, and a half darkness came in among the willows and the sycamores.” Darkness is throughout associated with death; impending darkness/half darkness with impending death.
7
FOCUSING ATTENTION The first and last scenes (mainly) use the light in nature to focus on the events taken place. In chapter 3, the bunkhouse is dark in the evening. When George & Slim come in, Slim turns on the light above the table which makes the reader focus on their conversation. The voices of Lennie and Candy come from the darkness, but the attention stays on the table conversation where the light is used to keep the readers attention.
8
Light in Nature “Although there was evening brightness showing through the windows of the bunkhouse, inside it was dark” – although light tries to get it, it cant penetrate the dark (evil/negative theme of book) "The Light climbed out of the valley" (story ending)
