Taoism “The Way”

Tao (pronounced "Dow") Translated into English as path, or the way. It refers to a power which envelops, surrounds and flows through all things, living and non-living. It is most similar to our concept of a life force.

Founder – Lao Tsu Alternative spellings: Lao Tze, Lao Tse, Lao Tzu, Laozi, Laotze There is some debate as to whether a man named Lao Tsu actually existed. Some scholars believe Lao Tsu is actually a mythical character. Others claim that Lao Tsu is a pen name given to a collection of writers who contributed to the Tao Te Ching.

Biography of Lao Tsu Most scholars believe Lao Tsu lived just before Confucius. (604-531 BC) He worked as the Keeper of the Archives for the royal court of the Chou. He did not open a formal school, but he had many students and disciples.

Biography of Lao Tsu (cont.) Members of the T’ang Dynasty claimed to be descended from a son of Lao Tsu. The stories of Lao Tsu claim that he left society because of its corruption to live as a hermit. Before leaving, he was asked by a city guard to write down his teachings. The result is the Tao Te Ching.

Major Beliefs of Taoism Tao is the cause of the universe. It is a force that flows through all life. Each believer’s goal is to harmonize with the Tao. Each person must nurture the Chi (air, breath) that has been given to them. Development of compassion, moderation and humility are important goals. Taoists follow the art of “wu wei” It translates “non-action”. It teaches followers to let nature take its course. (ie. go with the flow) Yin Yang represents balance in the universe. The Taoist beliefs are found in the Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way).
