BTEC-Computer Hardware1 BTEC National Unit 23
2
BTEC-Computer Hardware2 –Investigate basic computer architecture and the functions of devices –Dismantle and re-assemble a microcomputer system, including the base unit –Configure CMOS and system boards to match CPUs and peripheral devices –Troubleshoot and maintain a microcomputer system. This unit outlines the basic hardware of a computer. Gives learners the ability and confidence to build and upgrade PCs and to rectify simple faults. About this Unit What You Need To Learn
3
BTEC-Computer Hardware3 CPU ROM RAM I/O System Buses – You will need to able able to draw simple block diagrams of Computer Architecture
4
BTEC-Computer Hardware4 –Keyboard –PS/2 and Serial Mice –Serial and Parallel Ports –Connectors – COM1 and COM2 – LPT1 – USB – Graphics Ports – You will need to know about microcomputer systems: – modem – network – joystick – sound Computer Architecture
5
BTEC-Computer Hardware5 – You will need to know about the base system: CPU –AMD –Cyrix –Speeds –performance –Motherboards –Socket 7/Socket 370 –Slot 1/A –Form Factors Chip sets, e.g. LX, BX Computer Architecture
6
BTEC-Computer Hardware6 – You will need to know about the base system: Bus system ISA PCI AGP –Expansion cards, e.g. graphics, sound, modem, network cards Computer Architecture
7
BTEC-Computer Hardware7 Memory RAM (Random Access Memory) Temporarily stores data before it is sent to the CPU Storage Holds the data more permanently Examples are Hard drives Floppy drives CD_ROMS CPU OutputInputRAM Storage Computer Architecture
8
BTEC-Computer Hardware8 You must learn how to connect the hardware components of a stand-alone computer. These include the Main Processor Unit Keyboard Mouse VDU You will need to be able to connect up a computer system Computer Architecture
9
BTEC-Computer Hardware9 You must be able to configure the operating system to meet user needs. adjust the time or date create directory-folder structures change the layout of the GUI provide icons or menus to start software select the language set key-operated commands identify suitable printer drivers. System Software
10
BTEC-Computer Hardware10 You must be able to configure the applications software to meet user needs. set options for file locations provide and set printer drivers show and change toolbars set spelling and grammar checking. Application Software
11
BTEC-Computer Hardware11 To develop good practice in your use of ICT you must: –plan your work >> stick to deadlines –keep a log of ICT problems you met and how you solved them –evaluate your work >> suggest improvements –proof-read your templates or macros to ensure accuracy –keep backup copies of files on another disk and/or in another location –save work regularly using different filenames –keep information free from viruses –respect confidentiality –respect copyright. Computer Architecture
12
BTEC-Computer Hardware12 When setting up or using ICT systems, you must be able to work safely. You must ensure that: –cables do not cause an obstacle hazard –cables and connectors are electrically safe –you replace consumable materials correctly. Health & Safety
