I Looked at Two Key Summaries of Best Practice  School Health Promotion Effectiveness Framework Applied to Preventing Substance Abuse through Schools. (CASH)  Finding Prevention Standards and Guidelines (CCSA) Saw 5 “Clusters” of Best Practice Content and Process

 Cluster 1: A Focus on the Whole Child, the “Whole Picture”  Healthy child and youth development  Strength-based  Assets-based  [Attention to determinants of health] These are examples of best practice vs. evidence-based

 Cluster 2: A Focus on Whole Settings and Systems Community action Community ownership Community capacity building Comprehensiveness Consonance (Harmony) of efforts [Mapping]

 Cluster 3: The Importance of the School Setting and System  School engagement  School bonding  School retention  School performance  School environments

 Cluster 4: The Importance of the Family Setting and System  Early childhood development  Support to parents  Nurturing  Familial protective factors  Parent education

 Cluster 5: A Focus on Sociality Transitions Phases Peers Social Skills Social etiology, patterns of use, and focus of interventions Importance of interaction in programs

Also Noted Practices Facilitating Success Workforce development: knowledge, skills, readiness Continuing vs. sporadic: spiralling scope and sequence; messages enduring over time Successful Implementation and maintenance over time Age appropriate content (e.g., incidence reduction harm minimisation

The better we can understand the root factors contributing to incidence, prevalence and use patterns in early substance use, and how they interact with each other, the better we can identify best practices in any circumstance. The more loosely connected we are to these factors, the more risk we create for propagating looseness throughout our efforts
