1  Current Events  Lecture and Vocab  Group Activity  Formative Worksheet  Exit Today Objective: You will be able to define the principles of government and give examples of its purpose

2 Chapter 1: Principles of Government

3  The institution through which a society makes and enforces its public policies  Outlined in our constitution  Democracy  Public Policy  All the things a government decides to do  Examples???  Education, well-fare, military, roads What is Government?

4  The state can be defined as a body of people, living in a defined territory, organized politically, and with the power to make and enforce law without the consent of any higher authority  Examples??????  As you see they vary in size, power etc. What does “the State” mean?

5  Population  The number doesn’t matter  Territory  It must have recognized boundaries  Sovereignty  It haws supreme and absolute power within its own territory  Government  Politically organized Each state has four characteristics

6  In groups make a visual representation for the following concepts: try to figure it out  Form a more perfect union  Establish justice  Insure domestic tranquility  Provide for the common defense  Promote the general welfare  Secure the blessings of liberty Purposes of Government

7  As a country we are all linked together  All people and states are as one  We especially looked to the US Constitution to bind us under a common law and Union Form a more perfect union

8  Justice is key to a functioning democracy  Law must be reasonable, fair and impartial  “Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere” MLK Establish justice Blindfold - Impartiality, Freedom from corruption of the senses Scales - Each side is to be carefully examined Sword - Power of law

9  Keeping the peace at home is the prime function of the government  We must have laws to keep from having anarchy  Without governmental law and order Insure Domestic tranquility

10  Defense is used in the Constitution more than any other function of government  So much of what we think about with the government has to do with how we are being protected from foreign enemies Provide for the common defense

11  Government acts as a servant to its citizens  To benefit all or most people  Always take care of country and fellow citizens Promote the general welfare

12  Liberty is guaranteed but not absolute  We are free to do what we want as long as it doesn’t take away other people’s freedom. (rules) Secure the blessings of liberty

13  The following worksheet says Quiz but it isn’t one.  You must use your book to answer  The questions and concepts from the quiz may show up on the test whether we discussed them in class or not  Use the time we have left to finish this worksheet (or do it at home)  We will go over all of the worksheets before the quiz Formative worksheet

14  On a piece of paper answer the following question:  Look at the list and tell me:  Can we have one of these purposes without the others? Exit
