The Romans abandons Britain and the Attacks Begin 405 AD The Roman legions stationed in Britain are recalled. The Britons are attacked by: The Picts from the North The Irish from the West The Germans from the East Their High King Vortigern makes a deal with the German tribes the Angles, Saxons and Jutes or “Anglo-Saxons” Land for in exchange for Protection.

Britain becomes England But the deal went sour when the leader of the Angles died. His son led them in the conquest of most of southern Britain which became the Angland or… England Although the Danes conquered part of it for a while by 1035 the Anglo-Saxons push them out.

Vikings 793-1000 The Population of Scandinaviais growing they must go somewhere! They go… A-viking That is sail off to raid foreign lands, thus a “Viking” is not an ethnicity but a “raider” They were Swedish, Norwegian or Dane Viking Raids strengthened Feudalism because only a local lord could respond quickly enough to protect the people.

Monarchs struggled with Lords for power, the outcome varied… Spain and France: eventually the King wins The result is that they become united Absolute Monarchies Germany and Italy: the Lords win. Italy: becomes many little states Germany: becomes the “Holy Roman Empire” a loose confederation of little states
