Life is centered around below: Castle Manor Farming Lands

Why agree to Feudalism?  Protection  Also belief that God intended some people to be superior to others

Clergy/Monarchs  King sat atop the entire society in the beginning  By 1300 AD clergy and Monarchs were equal in top power  Lords also would begin to take power from the weaker Monarchs

Lords  Ruled over their own land.  Lived in the manor in a castle.  Spent time hunting, fighting in defense of king or checking on serfs  Ladies (Lords wives) made children, cooked, sewed and checked on serfs.

Vassals/Knights  Many were knights trained at birth  Adhered to Code of Chivalry  Lords broke land into Fiefs and gave to vassals in return for protection  If Lord was kidnapped in battle, Vassal would pay ransom

Serfs/Freemen  The peasants and at the bottom  Freemen paid Lord to use land and could leave at anytime  Serfs were prisoners to the land  Could not move, could not own land, could not marry without permission. Did not have to serve in military  Lived in small one-room cottages made of stone, sticks and mud and straw roof.  Spent harsh life – tried to run away would just become serf elsewhere.
