Chapter 2

How do plants reproduce?  Flowers are the organs that make seeds in flowering plants. The seeds grow into new plants. Several processes and all parts of a flower are needed to make seeds.

What are the parts of plants?  Parts of flowers: Sepals – the small, green leaves below the petals Petals – the colorful part of the plant Stamens – smaller stalks surrounding the pistil, the male part of the flower Pistil – small, knoblike structures, the female part of the flower

What are the parts of plants?  Pollen on the move: In order for a seed to form, pollen has to get from a stamen to a pistil. Animals play a big part in making this happen. Pollen needs to land on a pistil, then a thin tube forms and reaches the ovary. Once the tube reaches the ovary, the sperm cell from the pollen combines with the egg cell in the ovary in a process called fertilization.

What are the parts of plants?  After fertilization takes place a lot of changes happen to the plant. The petals and stamens dry up and fall off, because they are no longer needed. The fertilized egg inside the ovary develop into a seed. The ovary at the base of the pistil grows large and develops into a fruit.

What are the parts of plants?  Review:  What part of the flower covers and protects the bud?  How do animals help with pollinization?

What are the parts of plants?  Review:  What part of the flower covers and protects the bud? The sepals  How do animals help with pollination? The pollen from plants stick to them and they transfer the pollen to other plants.

What are the parts of plants?  Review:  What part of the plant makes eggs cells?  What attracts an animal to the nectar of a flower?

What are the parts of plants?  Review:  What part of the plant makes eggs cells? The pistil  What attracts an animal to the nectar of a flower? The colors of the flower’s petals and the sweet smell of the flower attract and guide the animal to the nectar.
