Geographic Information System GIS offer powerful tools for adding spatial perspectives to: –Planning –Research –Technology transfer –Impact assessment A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer-based software and hardware system for obtaining, managing and analysing spatial data.

Geographic Information System - High costs of software - High costs of hardware - Needs for specialized training But they have major drawbacks for developing countries : These constraints to effective use of GIS lead CIRAD to develop a tool for the spatial analysis and representation of PROMISE crop modeling results. This tool will allow the user to display on a map the input data for the model as well as the outputs from the model.

Geographic Information System With this tool we can manage spatial data : - Display (pan, zoom in, zoom out) - Thematic analysis (classification, …) - Queries and graphic selections (data extraction) - Data exportation - Layout and Printing - NO scale limits

Actual GIS-Crop model link database GIS Interface Crop model Interface User The link between the GIS tool and the crop model is not yet fully implemented. The GIS tool can display map of the input data and output data from the crop model, but the two softwares are independent.

What’s next ? GIS + Crop model User Interface Climate database GIS layers (Soils, Landuse, …) Promise grid for each cell of the grid, the GIS tool will extract the input variables (climate, crop, soil, …) for the crop model from the corresponding data layers, run the model and update the database with the results of the simulation. The user will be able manage the results of the simulations in a GIS like environment to create thematic maps. This tool (a single executable program that uses a standard Microsoft Windows user interface) will allow ‘inexperienced’ users to access the data, run the model and view the results.

The main purpose of this tool is, for a each cell of the dataset, to fetch the input variables (meteorological data, crop data, …) for the crop model in the corresponding data layers, to run the model and to update the database with the output variables from the model. The user will be able manage the results of the simulations in a GIS like environment to create thematic maps. This tool is a single executable program that uses a standard Microsoft Windows user interface and allow ‘inexperienced’ users to access the data, run the model and view the results.
