Chapter 1 – Intro to Chemistry
2
Chemistry and Matter Chemistry (defn) – study of matter and changes it undergoes Chemistry is central to ALL sciences –Ex: biology, earth science, astronomy, etc.
3
Matter Defn – anything that has mass and takes up space Can you always see matter? 1.Can you always FEEL matter? 2.Is everything made of matter? NO UH NOPE
4
Mass Defn – amount of matter something has Does everything have mass?
5
Weight Defn – measure of earth’s gravitational attraction for matter What weighs more – pound of feathers or pound of bricks? Is the volume equal? Are the overall masses equal?
6
Scientific Method Defn – systematic approach to solving problems Where do questions come from?
7
Parts of Scientific Method 1.Observation – act of gathering information, seen directly a) qualitative data – observation made w/o measurement (use 5 senses) b) quantitative data – made w/ measurement 4.4 lbs, 529 cm, $430, 1000 mL
8
Parts of Scientific Method 2. Hypothesis – testable explanation for observations; ask questions Where do hypotheses come from? OBSERVATIONS
9
Tom is a true Mack Daddy. Pimp Tom pimp. Is Tom a pimp?
10
Parts of Scientific Method 3. Experiment – way of testing hypothesis a) variable – factors that change i) independent variable – variable experimenter changes ii) dependent variable – depends on independent variable STIMULUS RESPONSE
11
Parts of Scientific Method b) control – standard for comparison; stays constant 4. Conclusion – proves/disproves hypothesis 5. Theory – explanation supported by many experiments
12
Parts of Scientific Method 6. Scientific Law – relationship in nature supported by many experiments
