Jag Nation Pride When you enter this classroom, immediately do the following: 1.Take your seat. 2.Turn off all electronic devices and place in backpack. 3.Take out all necessary materials (planner, binder, pencil) and place back pack on floor under desk. 4.Read the Smart Board and follow all directions posted. Copy homework assignment into planner. 5.Use a white board to complete any bell work that is assigned.

BELLWORK Write the solution in set notation and graph it. 3 + x > 4

Lesson 14 Solving Inequalities

STUDENT OUTCOME The student will…… learn if-then moves using the addition and multiplication properties of inequality to solve inequalities and graph the solution sets on the number line.

Exercise 1: pg. S.74 Consider the inequality A.Sift through some possible values to assign to that make this inequality a true statement. Find at least two positive values that work and at least two negative values that work. A.Should your four values also be solutions to the inequality ? Explain why or why not. Are they? C. Should your four values also be solutions to the inequality ? Explain why or why not. Are they? continued next page

Exercise 1: continued D. Should your four values also be solutions to the inequality ? Explain why or why not. Are they? E. Should your four values also be solutions to the inequality ? Explain why or why not. Are they?

Example 1:pg S. 75 What is the solution set to the inequality ? Express the solution set in words, in set notation, and graphically on the number line.

Exercise 2:pg S.75 Find the solution set to each inequality. Express the solution in set notation and graphically on the number line. a. b. c.

Exercise 2: continued d. e.

Exercise 3: pg S.76 a. Squaring: Do and have the same solution set? If not, give an example of a number that is in one solution set but not the other. b. Multiplying through by a negative number: Do and have the same solution set? If not, give an example of a number that is in one solution set but not the other. continued next page

Exercise 3: continued c. Bonzo’s ignoring exponents: Do and have the same solution set?

Example 3: pg S.77 Solve for and graph the solution.

Exercise 4: pg S.78 Find the solution set to each inequality. Express the solution in set notation and graphically on the number line. a. b. c.

Exercise 5:pg S.78 Recall the Properties of Inequality: Addition Property of Inequality: If A > B,then A + c > B + c for any real number c. Multiplication Property of Inequality: If A > B,,then kA > kB for any positive real number k. Use the properties of inequality to show that each of the following are true for any real numbers and p and q. a.If p > q, then -p -5q continued next page

Exercise 5: continued c. If p -.03q d. Based on the results from (a) through (c), how might we expand the multiplication property of inequality?

Exercise 6: pg S.79 Solve -4 + 2t - 14 - 18t > -6 -100t, for t in two ways: first without ever multiplying through by a negative number and then by first multiplying through by

Exercise 7: pg S.79 Solve, for x in two different ways: first without ever multiplying through by a negative number and then by first multiplying through by -4.

EXIT TICKET 1.Find the solution set to each inequality. Express the solution in set notation and graphically on the number line. a. b. 2. Fergus was absent for today’s lesson and asked Mike to explain why the solution to -5x > 30 is x < -6. Mike said, “Oh! That’s easy. When you multiply by a negative, just flip the inequality.” Provide a better explanation to Fergus about why the direction of the inequality is reversed.

Homework: pgs S.75-76 #’s 1-3
