1
Review Energy, Motion, Force Continental Drift Plate Tectonics
2
Review Energy – the ability to cause change Kinetic Energy – the energy of motion –KE= ½ m x v 2 Potential Energy – stored energy –Chemical potential – gravitational potential – Elastic potential GPE = m x 9.8 m/s 2 x h Energy can neither be created nor distroyed Work = F x dPower = w / t or e / t
3
Review Motion is a change in position Speed is change in position over time Velocity is speed plus direction Acceleration is change is speed or velocity over timea = (v f - v i )/t +a is speeding up -a is slowing down Force is a push or a pull
4
Review Newton’s 1 st law –An object that is in motion will remain in motion until acted on by an outside force. Newton’s 2 nd law –A force acting on an object will cause that object to accelerate in the direction of the force. F = m x a Newton’s 3 rd law –For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction Momentum - p = m x v
5
Review Continental Drift –Theory that the continents at one time were all connected together and then broke apart and drifted to their present positions Lines of Evidence –Jigsaw fit –Past climate –Rock formations –Fossils
6
Review Plate Tectonics –The crust of the earth is broken up into several pieces called plates (7 major) Boundary types –Divergent New crust forms –Convergent Mountain building and subduction zones – earthquakes volcanos –Transform Fault Source of earthquakes
