C ONSEQUENCES The result of your decision Can be positive or negative Can impact you for many years to come

What influences your decisions? Not everyone will make the same decision in the same situation Things that influence your decisions: Values Goals Standards Ethics Roles Stage in life Other people Resources Experience Knowledge

Take some of the uncertainty and doubt out of a decision by turning it into a process! Process: is a series of steps that leads to a conclusion Process

S TEPS TO THE DMP 1. Identify the decision to be made 2. Consider all options 3. Identify the consequences of each option 1. Select the best option 2. Implement a plan of action 3. Evaluate the decision

1. I DENTIFY THE DECISION TO BE MADE ● What are you trying to accomplish? ● Make it like a goal Example: Which college should I attend after I graduate from Warren Central??

2. C ONSIDER ALL POSSIBLE OPTIONS List every option Even ones that seem impossible or “out there” Consider your available resources & what you are trying to achieve Example: Purdue University, Indiana University, Butler, Ball State

3. I DENTIFY THE CONSEQUENCES OF EACH OPTION Pros vs. Cons Long term vs. short term Looking at the + and - will help you predict the outcome of your decision Example: ProCon PurdueBrand new co-recFreshman live on campus IUKelly School of BusinessLarge classes ButlerSmaller Classes$$$$ Expensive Ball StateClose to homeDorm Food

4. S ELECT THE BEST OPTION From your list of choices, select the option that seems the best to you. Example: Purdue University

5. M AKE & IMPLEMENT A PLAN OF ACTION How are you going to put your decision to work? Example: apply for admissions in the fall to Purdue & then attend the following year

6. E VALUATE THE DECISION Think back. Did the option work out the way you wanted? What could you change next time? Example: Went to Purdue. Felt like it was a good fit, & I meet lots of new friends. Will stay at Purdue for the next term.

I MPULSIVE Act without thinking Make a snap decision without considering the consequences

I NDECISIVE Unable to make a decision Might think about what will happen if you choose 1 option over another & never make a decision

O PPORTUNITY COST Value of what you are willing to give up to achieve something else Example: You might choose to accept a position as an unpaid intern in an industry that you find interesting. **You give up the wages you might earn in a different job in order to gain experience in the field of your choice

Watch the following video clip and answer the question https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmo0dAo-7PQ 1.At what step of the DMP is kronk? How do you know this?

In a paragraph, Reflect upon a poor decision you have made. Using the steps of the DMP Write about what you did at each step of the Decision Making Process. Identify where you messed up in the DMP. Tell how you will avoid making this mistake again. Summary
