2 Learning Objectives  Discover how mobile device technologies are changing the way and even the time that we are working  Discuss how these technologies enable flexibility of schedules that increase morale and productivity  Look at what is coming in the future and how the new technologies could once again revolutionize the way we get things done 7

4 Addiction Statistics  When the company provides the devices, employees may feel more obligated to remain connected. This could be self- induced pressure unless your employer is requiring this of you.  You may feel a sort of pressure to stay connected in order to be more productive or produce more than your peers  Some people have admitted using their devices as an escape from what is going on around them  Misuse of technology actually reduces your productivity Source: “Too much screen time? 6 Mobile Technology and the Office 13 SmartphonesTabletsLaptop/Software  Need to be available for calls  If you need to access e-mail  Occasionally access the Web  Use GPS  Occasionally review documents In addition to the smartphone capabilities  Don’t need to be available for calls  Do take a lot of notes  Don’t use a lot of company software and can access it other ways  Need to review information quickly in a portable way  If you have to use more than just the Internet and e-mail  If you have to edit and e-mail large files  If you have to do presentations  If you have programs that you can only access on your business network

7 Security Concerns  Be sure to use pass codes or screen locks  Use screen timeouts  Be sure you keep your operating system and applications updated  Install a “location finder” app on both tablets and smartphones that can easily be found in the market  If using public Wi-Fi or hotspots, be sure to stay secure by using VPN (virtual private network) or Internet browsers that provide downloads to secure browsing, such as Firefox ® (HTTPS everywhere) and Google Chrome ™ (redirect to HTTPS) 14
