When the first American settlers came to Seattle in 1853,they needed schools. Catherine Blain taught the first school in Bachlor’s Hall. Catherine’s first students were:Susie &Eliza Mercer, Laura,Virginia &Olive Bell, Ursula & George McConaha, Hulda Philps, William Smith, Becky Horton, Robbie Willard, Kate &Nora Denny. The school opened in 1853 with fees paid by parents. In August,1871,the private school had 295 children who wanted to go but only 130 were allowed in classes.

Since there were so many children t he settlers needed another solution. The solution was to build a public school. Some public schools started with logs or split Cedar. Finally, in 1870, the Seattle School Board built a Central School on 3 rd Ave. between Madison & Spring St. Lizzie Ordway was the first teacher. There were more than 200 students. Seattle Grows More Schools Soon more families came & there had to be more public schools. By 1889,Seattle boasted one dozen public schools. Early school included the original 2- room1899 Beacon High School at North End Hill. By1912 Seattle’s school district had 66 public schools.

Seattle’s high schools and Universities of Washington Soon the older students finished in the public or private schools so the Seattleites built a high school & a University. For high school graduates,they could go to the University of Washington that opened on November 4,1861.On June 4, 1886 the high school aged students attended classes. There have been two primary choices for high school: Beacon Hill residents had Cleveland Highschool, located on the South End of the hill at Lucille street and Franklin High School in Rainer Valley at the central base of the eastern side of the hill.
